POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME
Each academic year at UPM comprises of two semesters; the first semester starts in July and
finish in November while the second semester starts in December and concludes in April. The
enrolment process for the graduate studies programmes should be completed before the
beginning of each semester.
The minimum requirement for a graduate studies programme is a good Honour’s degree with
major in Mathematics or Statistics. Holders of degrees from universities outside Malaysia are
considered on their individual merit. A candidate should propose a field of study and prepare an
outline research proposal giving a clear description of the topic and planning of some approach
to be followed in the research work.
The department of Mathematics offers Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy
(Ph.D.) by research in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics.
Research under the supervision of at least one member of the department’s teaching staff, and
presentation/submission of the research results in the form of thesis is the main requirement for
obtaining post-graduate degrees. The graduate students are required to actively work toward
their research projects, write essays, participate in academic discussions as well as attend and
present seminars. Students are also required to fulfil the requirements and abide by the rules
and regulations relating to the period of studies and residence. For further information
candidates are advised to contact the Graduate Studies Coordinator of the
department (Dr Malik and
Dr Isa)
The length of time required for programme completion depends on the status of registration and
on the progress of an individual in finishing his/her research work and thesis. The regulations
pertaining to the duration for a programme completion are one year (two semesters) minimum
and ten semesters maximum for MS programme, and four semesters minimum and fourteen
semesters maximum for Ph.D. programme.
Students in need of some financial assistance to pay for the full or partial cost of their
programme may apply for scholarships, Graduate Research Assistance, Grants, or Loans from
various sources. The UPM, however, is not bound to accept any students who has been
awarded scholarships or/and loans unless the student has also been offered admission in a
separate exercise. It should also be noted that, invariably, scholarships or loans are awarded
only to students who have been admitted to the University. For detail concerning scholarships,
grants, and loans may be obtained from the Students Affairs Division of UPM.
At present the department is strengthen with three professors, one each in Applied
Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, and Statistics, seven Associate Professors,
