UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA
The Universiti Putra Malaysia
, better known as UPM, can trace its origins to
the School of Agriculture which was instituted on
21st May 1931. In 1942 the School was
upgraded to the College of Agriculture.
In 1948 it was proposed that the College be upgraded
to a university. However, the proposal was
shelved due to the declaration of Emergency in the
middle of the year. In 1960, the Faculty of Agriculture,
University of Malaya was established,
and in 1962 it was upgraded to Agricultural College of Malaya.
The establishment of an
Agricultural University of Malaysia was proposed in 1969 and was
enacted on 4th October
1971. It started its operation with three faculties and since
then has been continuously growing.
Today the University has ten faculties and six centres,
enrolling more than 14000 students in
24 bachelor programmes, ten diploma programmes, one professional
diploma programme, one
pre-diploma programme, and several graduate studies programmes
at Master’s and Ph.D.
levels.
Presently the University has two campuses. The main University
Campus has been established
on 1200 hectors of lush green plateau near Serdang, a small
town about 23 kilometres from
Kuala-Lumpore, the capital city of Malaysia. The other
Campuse is in Kuala
Terengganu (Terengganu).
In addition to these two campuses, the
University also operates a number of stations/farms
at various locations throughout Peninsular
Malaysia.
