Message from the Editors The following proceeding represent the cream of nearly one hundred presented and poster papers tabled at the International Conference on the Straits of Malacca held in Malacca on 19th-22nd April 1999. The papers were of a high standard, and most important, significantly advanced our knowledge of environmental and economic resources of the straits. Collectively, they represent a major collection of information on the environmental and economic values of the Straits and highlight the critical images that bind them together. We believe that these proceedings would prove to be a vital reference to resource managers, environmentalists, policy makers and shipping community in the development and management of the Straits' resources. We hope it will enable resource managers and planners to look at the Straits from a multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral stand point, engendering an integration and synthesis of the many approaches taken in its sustainable development. In compiling these proceedings, we sought the support and efforts of numerous individuals. Among those who stand out include Mr. S Sugiyama, Drs. Paymon Roustaian, Sanjoy Benerjee and Suzana Saat, Ms. Chan Soo Mun, Mr. Devaraja T.N. and Ms. Siti Zubaidah Mat Saad. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank JICA for funding the publication of these proceedings. We hope that this proceedings prove as rewarding to you as putting it together was for us.
