Research Interests
Kaida bin Khalid researches electromagnetic
fields and waves in industrial and agriculture applications, analyzing physical
aspectsof the interactions of these fields and waves with moist substances
and development of RF and Microwave moisture sensors
Dr. Khalid's current work includes the
theoritical and experimental investigation of hevea rubber latex and oil
palm mesocarp at -30 C to 50 C with moisture content and frequency ranging
from 40% to 100% and 0.001 Hz to 20 GHz respectively.
Another area of research focuses on the
development of new moisture sensors for various lossy liquids and oil palm
mesocarp. The sensors are based on the waveguide and microstrip structures.
Research Achievements
and Benefits
-
Results on the dielectric
properties of hevea rubber latex at various moisture contents ranging from
40% to 100% (wet basis), frquency from 0.2 GHz to 20 GHz and temperature
from -30 C to 50 C were obtained. Transition in the form of dielectric loss
from conductive loss possibally due to charged particles in latex to dipole
orientation of water molecules at about 2.0 GHz was observed. - A portable
,rapid, simple to operate, cheap and accurate instrument has been developed
for determination of moisture content in various lossy liquids and dry
rubber content in hevea latex. This prototype known as MRT moisture meter
and latexometer is based on reflection
method and be able to give the accuracy at the level less than 1%.This instrument
has been patented in Malaysia( MY-106441-A) and received the first prize
in General Tech. Invention in the 1990 Malaysian Invention and Design Competition.
- A microstrip sensor for oil palm fruits has been developed to gauge
the ripeness and quality of the fruits.
- Results on the dielectric properties of oil palm mesocarp at various
stages of maturity and over a frequency range of 0.2 to 20 GHz.
