RESEARCH INTEREST:

Research interest focuses on genetics and reproductive biology of freshwater fish, giant freshwater prawn and selected bivalves and also the culture of finfish. The research includes on breeding, molecular genetics, and genetic manipulation of several local freshwater fish. The breeding research focuses on the breeding technique in captivity of commercially important cyprinids and catfishes. The genetic manipulation research is aimed at developing triploids and gynogenetic cyprinids that provides potential of using the genetic manipulated fish for aquaculture.  Work on genome mapping is designed at developing DNA microsatellite markers of Mystus nemurus to detect location of economical traits in the genome and also its potential use in cross species amplification. The research funding has come primarily from IRPA (Intensified Research for Priority Areas) and MPKSN (National Science and Development Research Council, Malaysia), National Biodirectorate BIOTEK and Industrial Grant Scheme (IGS) (Agroharvest Sdn. Bhd.).
