The
Biology Department is situated in the main campus of Universiti
Putra Malaysia in Serdang, Selangor. From its humble beginning
in July 1972 as one of the four founding departments of
the Division of Basic Sciences in UPM, it has grown to be
one of the largest departments in the university. Although
its original role was to provide basic biology courses for
all life science-based programmes in UPM, it has since 1975
offered its own undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.
It is now a Department in the Faculty of Science.
In
order to achieve its main objective of providing professional
and academic training in various fields of biology, the
Department has well-equipped laboratories for both teaching
and research. Apart from these laboratories, the Department
also has support facilities such as Zoological Museum, Herbarium,
Animal House, Mollusc House, Insectorium, Glasshouse and
Field Station at Port Dickson (about 100 Km south of the
main campus).
Research
is strongly emphasised in the Department and the final year
curriculum of the honours degree programmes includes a substantial
research project. The bachelor programmes are regularly
assessed by external examiners from both local and overseas
universities.
The
Department has a system of academic advisers (counselling)
to help the students plan the courses they take.
